SYNOPSIS: Despite the z in the title, this is not an "urban" movie. In fact, no minorities had their careers harmed in the making of this film.
A University Professor is working on a cure for cancer with his Grad Student in an off-campus lab in a lonely industrial area, having lost his university-sponsored funding, probably due to the fact that biocontrol procedures include pouring experimental drugs down the sink to be drunk by escaped experimental ratz. Meanwhile, the grad student's friends -- the Slutty One, the Jock (we know he's the Jock because his introductory dialog includes the line, "I'm not just a jock, you know"), the Slutty One's Ex, the Obnoxious One, and the Nice One -- decide to celebrate the end of finals by getting drunk and showing up at his work to get him fired. Meanwhile, the professor's cat goes to investigate that funny noise in the basement and gets eaten by ratz.
The friends show up at the lab. The Grad Student tries to get them to leave, then notices that yet another of the experimental ratz has escaped and figures he'll get fired if he doesn't recover it before the Professor notices. Meanwhile, the professor goes to investigate that funny noise in the basement and gets eaten by ratz.
The Grad Student convinces his friends to help him search for the missing rat. The Obnoxious One refuses because he doesn't want to get eaten by ratz. The Grad Student and the Nice one search the first floor. The Slutty One and the Jock go upstairs tosearch for the missing rat have sex on the roof. Unfortunately, they realize that they left their protection in the glove compartment of their VW bus, so they go downstairs to get condoms eaten by ratz. Meanwhile, the Ex goes to investigate that funny noise in the basement and gets eaten my ratz.
The Obnoxious One sees the Slutty One get eaten by ratz and runs around the building screaming about killer ratz. The Jock escapes into the building. The two of them meet up with the Grad Student and the Nice One and they all realize they need to flee, but are mysteriously unable to get to an exit. Instead, the Obnoxious One barricades himself in a rat-infested room, ignoring the pleas of the others to let them in and stranding them outside where it's safer. Despite this, the Jock gets eaten by ratz.
The Grad Student and the Nice One barricade themselves in an elevator, then accidentally figure out how to kill the ratz while trying to attract help. Well, the regular swarm-level ratz, anyway. There is still the Guy in a Rat Suit that they have to defeat before limping off into the dawn to prepare for the sequel, which was never made. Hopefully, because the producers got eaten by ratz.
